Thanks to Evan Puschak at Nerdwriter we have a short video that explores the structure of the fight at Helms Deep, a key (and long) sequence from The Two Towers.
Pay particular attention to how Puschak maps the dramatic arc of the story-within-a-story, literally graphing it scene-by-scene and comparing it to traditional story arcs and how conflict rises vs time.
How do you think about conflict when you write a story? Do you map it? Do you think of it structurally? Or do you wing it and add dramatic bumps whenever things get boring? Tell us in the comments.
PS. If you’re a music fan, Nerdwriter also created this video on Howard Shore’s score for LotR.
