Hey polgar! I thought I'd answer your question here.
To submit to the competition in December once the next challenge is announced, (Nov. submissions are over now), you have to select a drop down on the 'edit details' page of a storybird. You do have to be over 18 or the option might not show up. When I start a story, it asks me if the story is for the competition, but I can always not submit it later.
