It's interesting how we came up with very similar themes from this art.

Funny you should mention that. I was thinking how using Storybird reveals themes in the artist's work as you interact with it. On the surface, Pascal has a lot of adventure. But when you peel it back the common thread is companionship and friendship.

Case in point: I started to write this as the adventure of the orange chair. But in the end, Max and Sam became the narrative.

Years ago I read a quote from Woody Allen's editor Ralph Rosenblum who (now famously) noted "editing is directing the second time around." This is becoming very clear to me as I use Storybird.

We think this story is the best. You've really described the friendship of Max and Sam but we like how you've left a lot of the story up to our imagination. Thank you for writing this story. We think you should have it published.
    Posted 27 months ago (Permalink)
  • mark
    mark says:
Thanks guys. I'm glad you like the story. I take the comment about having it published as a compliment, too. But the nice thing about Storybird is that Sam & Max IS published. It's here, and there, and everywhere, really. And soon you'll be able to get a copy physically. We think that's the new kind of publishing: something that's a bit more elastic and rubbery than before.

BTW, you guys rock. Saw you on Twitter!

A very beautiful story, the narrative is simple but very meaningful. It can be a cute story for children or have a deeper meaning to older people. I love the way the art creates the theme for the story - absurd_bird and I are currently in the process of creating a storybird with Pascal Campion's Orange chair art. I think that it's so versatile - it can be used to display adventurous romps or meaningful narratives like this one. I look forward to reading more great storybirds from you.

    Dear Mark,
I'm typhie and I enjoy writing stories like war time and the girl and the bear but I understand their not suitable for others. Is there another site I can write stories like that are violent?

    Posted 19 months ago (Permalink)
  • mark
    mark says:
@typhie: a few things come to mind. First, why not just keep them private? Then they stay undmoderated. Second, maybe it's the way you're approaching violence. Look at my story "Feeling the sun but showing the moon." The boy gets murdered by the bear at the end. But it's done with "offstage" violence. It's suggestive and discrete. Finally, if neither of these ideas help, consider something like Protagonize. It's pure writing (no pictures), but if you're looking for social interaction with your stories, they don't have a young audience to be mindful of like we do. Good luck!
