Beauty hides in the strangest places
A Doorway To Heaven
Life in Detroit was rough. Gang violence, drugs and just something you don’t want to be a part off. Unfortunately that’s where I call home. Pretty much my entire life me and my dad were living thin. If the neighborhood was wrecked, where we lived was twice that. We bounced back and forth around different communities and stuff but it was always the same. I was ok with it but I feel like my dad felt like he’s failing me or something, so one day he confronted me about it.
“Jessica.” He sighed.
I frowned at him. What was he talking about?
“I’m going to be away for a while. Going to do something with my life and get a job or something.”
“Why?” I ask.
“What’s wrong here?”
He stared at me sadly.
“All my life I just wanted to make you happy. This isn’t what I wanted your childhood to be like. This concrete slab is not a suitable space for a child. Anyways point is I’m leaving.”
Tears had started to form in my eyes.
“I- I- I don’t want you to leave.....I don’t want you to go....”
“Jessica I-“
“WHY DO YOU HAVE TO LEAVE! YOUR GOING TO TURN OUT LIKE MOM!”
My dad exploded.
“I FAILED YOU OK! YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT IT’S LIKE TO FEEL LIKE YOUR A FALIURE! A FRAUD! A DISAPPOINTMENT!”
“Dad.....”
“I just don’t want you to end up like me.” He said not looking at me.
“It’s fine.” I said.
“I lost control.... I- I should go.”
“Jess...” My dad said reaching out to me but I was already gone. Down the dirty hallway. Out the door and speeding off into the fog of the night...
I walked down the empty concrete road, lost in thought. He was leaving. After all that they did together he would be gone. Just like that. Even though he was only now a couple kilometers away he might as well be a thousand.
It would probably not be long before he would be gone and I would be alone again. Empty and alone.
I froze. There was an abandoned factory on my right side. I stared suspiciously at it. That definitely was not there yesterday.
Thinking there might be something worth foraging I jogged toward the door. It was smothered in graffiti. Which probably meant the viper gang got here before I did.
I opened the door and looked inside. Nothing but empty blackness. Curiously I stepped inside and gasped.
The factory had dissapeared all together. Instead a massive field surrounded me. Filled with different creatures I had never seen before one had a massive feathery wings specked with silver and the body of a bear. It strided toward me and started to speak.
“Welcome to the land of hope. The door you had walked into is one of the very few shrines that lead toward this world. Only those in need are able to see it though. You are welcome to stay here if you wish. There is plenty of food, water and shelter.”
A wild grin started to appear on my face.
“Hang on, first I need to find my dad, I think we found our new home.”
