Counting Stars
Chapter 1
A Little About Me
Hi I’m Kate. I live in New York with my Mom. We moved here 4 years ago from Brazil. That can make it pretty hard to fit in. So I don’t spend a lot of time with kids at school. Most of my free time is spent at the library, reading new books on art and music. My cat, Peanut, follows me everywhere I go. To the store, the library, school. She always sits outside and patiently waits for me until I come out.
I wish we didn’t live in the city. When I was little, Dad and Mom would take me outside at night, and we would look at the stars. You can’t see stars in the city.
When we left Brazil, my Dad had to leave on a business trip. He said he would follow us as soon as he got back. But when we said good-bye at the airport was the last time I saw Dad. He never came. He never called. I don’t know what happened, but it changed Mom. We don’t get to spend much time together anymore. Every day when she get’s home from work, she says, “Kate, would you make some dinner, honey. I’m so exhausted.”
So I end up making dinner almost every day, and we both plop into bed almost too tired to say good night. I’m sick of it. I wish we could go back home, with my old friends and the old field I used to play in. You don’t stop missing home, even after four years.
