What’s stronger? True love, or soulmates?
Just to be Safe
“So we’re going to keep you here a little longer because we’re a little worried about your head. So far nothing bad has happened, of course, but we just want to be safe.” Doctor Willis says.
“Can we see Leo?” Ruby asks.
Doctor Willis shakes her head. “I’m sorry, he’s still too unstable, the chance of infection is just too high.”
Ruby and I sigh but we’re not surprised, that’s the same answer we’d gotten the other five times we’d asked.
“You can see your mom though.” Doctor Willis smiles.
“Yeah, go get some answers, Char.” Ruby says, smiling comfortingly.
I nod and doctor Willis helps me into a wheelchair. She wheels me down the hall and into the elevator until we finally come to a stop in a doorway. My mother is lying in a hospital bed, awake and alert, she smiles when she sees me.
“I was going to tell you soon.” She says.
I laugh, “I’m going to have a sister?”
She nods. “You’re going to have a sister.” She says.
“So dads getting remarried and I’m going to be a big sister, it’s a lot to take in at once.” I say.
“Oh, I’m sorry sweetie, I know it’s a lot.” She says.
“It’s alright mom.” I smile.
“Okay, well you go get back to your room. They’re keeping me for observation too and I want you resting.” My mom smiles.
Doctor Willis wheels me back to my room and I climb back into bed.
“So.” Ruby says.
“So.” I sigh.
“This is a lot to take in.” She says.
“You read my mind.” I smile.
“Liam’s doing pretty well.” Ruby says.
“I wish we knew more about Leo.” I sigh.
“I do too.” Ruby says, mournfully.
Ruby puts a hand to her temples as if she has a headache.
“You okay?” I ask.
Ruby nods, “I’m fine, just a headache.” She says. “As if I didn’t have enough to make life suck already.” She laughs, then her eyes roll back in her head and she collapses. The monitors she’s connected to start to beep rapidly and several doctors and nurses run in.
Doctor Willis runs up to Ruby, she takes one look at the monitor and says, “Lets get her up to CT I think her brain might be hemorrhaging.” She says, opening Ruby’s eyes and running a penlight over her eyes.
“Ruby!” I call out again, but they either ignore me or don’t hear me because they don’t stop as they wheel Ruby out of the room.
“Is she going to be alright?” I ask a remaining nurse.
“I don’t know yet, I’m sorry.” She says.
“Can I see my friends? Leo or Liam?” I ask.
“Leo is still too unstable but you can see Liam, actually the news about Ruby might be better coming from you.” She says.
She helps me into a wheel chair and we go a few doors down to Liam’s room.
“Hey, where’s Ruby?” He asks, smiling.
“Liam,”I say, slowly. His face falls.
“Something happened, they’re taking her to have surgery or something.” I say.
Liam’s dark eyes fill with tears.
“It’ll be okay.” I say, but I’m not sure I believe that. “Have you heard anything about Mari and Marcus?” I ask, trying to change the subject.
“They’re alright, seems like we got the worst of it which totally sucks because they’re to ones who were driving drunk and hit us.” Liam says.
“Life sucks.” I point out.
“How much longer are you going to be here?” Liam asks.
“Probably just another night, for observation.” I say.
“Just to be safe, that’s what they said right?” Liam asks.
“Yeah,” I sigh.
“There’s nothing safe about this place.” Liam says. “Not the hospital exactly, just everything.” He says.
I nod in agreement. “You never think about something like this happening.” I say.
“And then it does and everything is suddenly just wrong.” Liam says in agreement.
That sentence perfectly describes my life. Everything is just wrong.
