How long can you last lying to Those you say you love?
Swimming In Lies
CHAPTER
34
Idiot
Amelia’s POV
You know, most people would assume, “Hey, that Amelia girl is pretty intelligent,” right?
Well, I’ve just done the most idiotic thing in the history of the world.
I trusted Ryan.
Now, of course, I didn’t really trust Ryan. I would never do that. Jeez, I’m not that stupid.
However, this was the first time my lies came back to bite me in the butt.
The story about Adam and my breakup?
Lies.
Me missing my old, “normal” life with Ryan?
More lies.
Promising to go back with Ryan and never betray him again?
That might have been the biggest lie I’ve ever told.
However, this was the first time he caught me and called me out for it.
“You betrayed me, and I can’t forgive you for that.”
He was right.
The second I said that I would never betray him again, I already did.
And now I’m sitting here with a gun pointed to my head.
Don’t you just love life?
“Ryan, listen. Do you really want to kill me? Think about it. What would you do without the love of your life, Ryan? I know you can’t find another. There’s no one else like me. You won’t do it, Ryan. You love me too much.” I stated calmly.
If he wanted to be the manipulator, he would have to beat me first.
I could feel his grip on the gun loosen slightly.
“What do you plan to do after I’m dead? I know you want to take down Charlie’s agency, but you said it yourself, you can’t do it without me. If I’m dead, who will help you?” I continued to question.
He quickly tightened the grip on the weapon again, pressing it closer to my head. “I never said anything about needing you to help me.” He snarled.
To be completely honest, I wasn’t entirely sure if he ever said anything of that sort or not. I certainly seemed like something he would say, but he might not have.
“Fine. But admit it, you need someone as skilled at lying as I am to help you. Charlie trusts me completely, Adam. If you let me live, I will help you.” I said, trying to stay calm, but it sounded more pleading than I intended.
“Why would I trust you just on your word? You just lied to me, Amelia. I’ve let you lie and go too many times. It has to stop, Amelia. This is the only way.”
I heard the click of the gun as it loaded.
He was becoming more and more hysterical with each passing moment. He was sobbing, yet laughing at the same time.
He was somehow becoming even more psychotic.
“Ryan, Ryan, please! I know you don’t trust me to stay with you, but there has to be something I can do. Please, Ryan, I’ll do anything! Just...don’t...”
He had begun to tighten his arm around my throat in excitement.
“Anything?”
I nodded.
“Kiss me.”
I didn’t understand.
He had already kissed me before, multiple times. Why would he want me to kiss him now? It seemed like such an odd request, but wasn’t the worse possible one.
Even in his fit, he seemed to notice my confusion.
“I mean... you kiss me. I’ve always been the one to initiate the kiss. I want you to initiate it this time. You kiss me.
“And what happens if I do?” I immediately asked, not wanting to risk the consequences.
“I let you go.”
“What?”
I couldn’t believe what I had heard.
Did he say...he would let me go?
“All I ever wanted from you was for you to kiss me. If you do that, I’ll be satisfied. Sure, I’ll be upset and I’ll miss you like crazy ...but I’ll let you go. I’ll have what I needed from you.”
All he wanted...was a kiss?
“So...you’re saying...all this mess, this torture, this game of cat and mouse...it was for a kiss?”
He lowered the gun from my head, and set it down behind him.
“Well, no, of course not. I wanted you to stand by my side, Amelia. I wanted you to be mine, and nothing more. Obviously, you aren’t going to do that willingly, so I’ll just have to settle for a kiss.”
This seemed so out of character for him.
Why had he suddenly calmed down? Why had he set down the gun? Something was going on here, but I couldn’t figure out what.
But at the same time, I couldn’t turn down this offer. All I had to do was kiss him, something I had done a couple times before, and he would let me go.
I was about to do the most idiotic thing I could, again.
I was going to trust him.
“Fine.” I whispered.
He unlocked the handcuffs, and help me stand up.
“Alright.” I sighed slightly, and closed my eyes.
The next thing I knew, our lips connected, and the rush of fear ran through me.
I could feel Ryan smile, and he pulled me closer to him.
“Amelia?”
My head whipped around, and I saw Charlie standing outside the warehouse doors, my sister on the ground behind him. She appeared to be motionless. Not dead, but motionless.
“Charlie!” I shrieked.
The next thing I knew, the world slowed down, I was blacking out, and Charlie was running towards me.
