The Secret Land of
The Magical Adventure
“Goodnight honey. Sleep well. Love you,” my mom said as she tucked me in and gave me a kiss. I smiled back and said,
“Love you too, mom.”
My mom turned off the light and walked out of my bedroom and I laid there on my bed with the tower fan blowing cool air on to my skin, that warm summer night.
It was the last day of June, so almost July and the nights were not cooling off as much as they had been at the start of June. I began to not sleep very well at night, so we had to bring out the tower fan to keep me cool.
My name is Emma Carter and I am 12 years old. I have a mom and a dad of course and two sisters, Anna and Clara, who are twins at the age of 10. My sisters and I all have wavy, auburn hair and green eyes that sparkle like emeralds, which is something that other people have told me once before, not something that I would have said on my own.
All of a sudden, as I was laying in my bed that warm summer night, I was awoken by a strange humming sound coming from my closet door. Whirrrrrrrrrrr.
Was I dreaming? No, I was definitely awake. It was just past midnight and the clock downstairs was chiming. There was a faint bluish-purple colored light coming out of the crack underneath the closet door. I got out of bed and opened the closet. I was shocked to see that there was a portal inside, but to where?
As I stood there staring curiously at the portal, I imagined where the portal could possibly lead to. Did it go to Paris, France, the place I’d dreamed of going for my whole life so that I could finally see the Eiffel Tower? Did it lead to an enchanted castle, like those in the movies? Did it lead to London, Niagara Falls, or even maybe just my best friend’s house? So many different thoughts and possibilities swirled through my head, along with other thoughts. Other thoughts like, should I enter the portal or how long will I be in the portal? This was a lot to take in all at once, so I decided to sit on my bed and soak it all in.
I knew I wasn’t going to tell anyone about this portal until I was back home safe and the portal was gone. If I told my mom, then I am pretty sure she wouldn’t let me go, so I definitely don’t want to do that because then I will have no chance of being able to go at all. If I tell my sisters, they will probably want to go with me, which would normally be fine, but I don’t want them to accidentally tell my mom anything about this. At least not yet.
I am not good at making decisions and especially not quickly, so trying to figure out quickly if I wanted to go through the portal or not, was very hard. I guess it didn’t really matter where the portal led to, it would be fun to go anywhere, as long as the place was safe and not scary, that is. I needed to think fast because sooner or later someone from my family would probably hear the portal and come into my bedroom.
I ended up just deciding to go through the portal. I thought it’s a fifty-fifty chance of it either being fun or not fun and safe or not safe, so I decided to give it a try. Before I went into the portal, I quickly prayed that everything would be okay and safe on this unexpected and unknown journey that I was about to take.
Now, don’t ask me what happened while I went through the portal and while I was in the portal because for some odd reason I don’t remember any part of that journey. Maybe, the portal has like some magic power that erases that part of the journey from your mind or something. Who knows?
Anyway, when I stepped foot on land, I looked around me and saw trees absolutely everywhere and in a variety of many different colors. Some dark and gray, some brown with red and orange leaves, some indigo-colored, and some healthy brown trees with bright green leaves, but something that they all had in common was that they were covered in...moss.
This place seemed like an old and abandoned forest and it was definitely not what I imagined when going through a portal. The ground was completely covered in a mixture of mossy rocks, dead leaves, and dirt. This place was very bizarre. When I looked around again, I noticed something that I hadn’t noticed before. I saw a mangled and crooked sign standing next to me that said Welcome to Trollsvania. In a confused voice, I asked,
“Trollsvania? What kind of place is this?”
“Oh it’s a very strange place if you ask me, but I’ve learned to love it over the years,” a foreign voice said from behind me. I quickly swirled around just in time to see a girl, about my age, with blue hair. She was wearing a purple dress and purple shoes. I wonder if this girl likes the color purple. Why am I thinking these kinds of things when I’m stuck in a foreign world who knows where I thought.
“Uh, who are you?” I asked perplexed, with a weird look on my face, which was actually kind of rude when I think about it, but I can’t necessarily change what’s in the past. The girl laughed and replied with,
“Oh sorry. I always forget to introduce myself. My name is, Zara. Just, Zara. What’s your name?”
“My name is Emma Carter,” I said. Ugh. Why did I just tell her my last name? I should have just told her my first name. My parents always tell me to never say my full name to a stranger but wait. Maybe Zara doesn’t count as a stranger because I am in a whole different world now. I’m not very good at all this portal stuff I said in my head. Breaking the silence, Zara, suddenly brought me out of my thoughts and back to earth by saying,
“Well, it’s very nice to meet you, Emma. What brings you here?” I told her everything about how I had been sleeping when I suddenly heard the whirrrrrrrrrrr sound of the portal and how I had ended up making the decision to go through the portal, ending up on the grounds of Trollsvania. She nodded her head and replied,
“I was only wondering because many people come here every year, but they all come for many different reasons and in many different ways, so it’s always interesting to hear their stories.”
“Do you live here?” I asked, which was such a dumb question because obviously, she lived there, but I just asked the question anyway.
“Yes, I do in fact, live here...but not alone.” All of a sudden, weird creatures of all shapes and sizes appeared out of nowhere. Zara must have seen the worried look on my face because she walked over to me, put her hand on my shoulder and told me not to worry.
“These are all of the creatures that live here. They lived here long before I was even born. They rule this world and their job is actually to grant blessings to the people of your world, Emma,” Zara said. I gasped and replied with,
“Really? I never knew that.”
“Yeah, many people don’t realize it, but it’s true,” Zara answered. Zara pulled a sparkling, purple wand out of the air and pointed it at the weird creatures and just like that, they disappeared into thin air. This place just keeps getting more and more magical by the moment, I thought, maybe this place isn’t so bad after all.
“Come on, Emma. Follow me,” Zara told me as she led me over to two tree stumps and we sat down. Once we had sat down, Zara continued,
“I know I just met you today, but I feel that you are the right person for this.”
“For what,” I asked.
“I want to tell you a secret, but you have to promise me that you won’t tell a single soul,” Zara said with a serious tone. I thought for a second, but then I replied with,
“Tell me your secret. I promise I won’t tell a single soul.” She hesitated for a little bit but then started telling the secret,
“There is this boy that lives here. His name is Tom and he is sooo lazy, but don’t tell him that I said that. Every month he was supposed to choose a certain amount of people from your world to come to our world, that was his job, but he was slacking...big time. I’m not entirely sure why someone from your world has to come to our world every month, I never really understood that, but I’ve learned not to question the powers that be, meaning the creatures that rule this land. I decided that I could take on his role and so I did, but I never had the guts to tell the ruling creatures that I had done so. I know that Tom needs to be punished so that he can learn from his laziness and mistakes, but I don’t want the punishment to be too severe and I don’t want him to get hurt, so I’ve just kept it a secret all this time. I needed to be able to tell someone because it had been weighing on me for such a long time and that is why I chose you to come through the portal and I was hoping that maybe you could help me figure this out. I really need someone else’s opinion. I’ve been longing for that all these years, but you don’t have to help if you don’t want to.”
I was absolutely speechless and I had to let all of this soak in. Zara wanted my help? Why me? Of all the people in my world, why would she choose me? Like, I felt honored, but also weird at the same time.
“I feel honored that you chose me to help you out of all the people in my world, but I’m not sure that I’m the correct person for this,” I answered.
“Ok...well...I don’t want you to feel that you have to help. I was just hoping that maybe you could. I figured that since you were such a loyal, honest, humble, and kind girl that you would be perfect for this, but maybe I was wrong,” she said in a sad voice as she looked down.
I thought it over once again in my head. I guess Zara must have seen something in me otherwise she wouldn’t have chosen me to help her. I know I just met her today, but I just have a weird feeling that we could potentially become awesome friends one day and maybe this is finally an opportunity for me to have a close friendship with someone since I’ve never really had a close friend before.
“Zara,” I said.
“Yes,” Zara responded, bringing her head back up again.
“I want to help you, no matter what it takes. Even though we just met today, I think that together, both of us can figure out what to do and how to solve this problem. I believe in us,” I said. She nodded, smiled, and replied with,
“Thank you so much, Emma. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”
We created a secret handshake, talked, laughed and laughed and talked some more. Then Zara said,
“I think it’s time for you to get back home now.”
“Okay,” I said and she led me back to where I had landed when I first came through the portal. She opened the portal with her magical purple wand and said,
“Goodbye, Emma.”
“When I was standing here earlier today I wanted to leave, but now I don’t,” I said with a laugh. Zara laughed and said,
“Yeah, this place can do that to ya, but don’t worry. I am going to choose you to come back next month. There are a lot of rules here, but there are none that say you can’t come here more than once. Bye, Emma. I’ll miss you.”
“Bye Zara. I’ll miss you too,” I replied with a wave and with that I went through the portal.
When I was safe and sound, back in my room, I climbed back in bed and heard the clock chiming downstairs. It chimed exactly 12 times. It was still midnight. That’s weird. Funny.
“That place sure is magical alright,” I said to myself and then I fell fast asleep...
The End
...well for now, until next time.
