Talking with Kelly
Kelly and I skipped out into the warm sunshine. Kelly’s family lived in the country, about twenty minutes drive from town, so all around us were fields and trees. She led me to a large, flat rock that she called “the stone table” and we sat down. Then she started whistling softly.
I giggled. “What are you doing?”
She laughed. “You’ll see.”
A second later, and sleek black cat with white paws sped out of the bushes and pounced on us. Kelly laughed.
“This is Jade. Jade, this is Lily.” Jade purred and rubbed up against me.
“Hello, Jade; it’s nice to meet you,” I said.
“So,” said Kelly. “School tomorrow is going to be SO much fun! I can introduce you to all my friends, and you’ll meet all the teachers, who are super cool, except Mrs. Hern, the principal. She is a CRANK! But you only get sent to her if you are SUPER bad. Like, you’d have to start a fight or something. Mom already called and scheduled your classes. You and I will be in all the same ones!”
“Most of the kids are pretty chill. You’ve got the cool kids, like Brandon and Michele. Then you’ve got the middle class kids, like Julie and me. Then you’ve got the nerds, like Michael and Aaron. It all sounds pretty complicated right now, I know, but you’ll get the feel for it.”
I laughed. “I’ll take care of that when tomorrow comes, but for now, how about a race across that field? I feel like a good run!”
Kelly grinned mischievously. “You’re on!” And off we ran.
